Can You Create Your Own Leader For Fly Fishing? What Size Line Would I Need?

I am leaving out of town and i dont have the time to go buy a leader so im just wondering if I couldnt create my own

    yes, get 3x and 5x fly line, tie the 3x first and then the 5x on that, 4 foot each

  • you will probably wish you had taken the time to purchase a tapered leader.
    you will need an assortmend of hard stiff monos from about 6lb all the way up to 40 for the butt section. then you should have a tying jig for correct knot placement and correct section sizes. you may have a good tying formula but by time you purchase the lines necessary to build a leader you could purchase one ready made. way more trouble than it’s worth unless you absolutely need a specialized one for a particular application you just can’t find pre-made.
    buuut…l would venture a guess of 6, 10, 20, 30 and 40 with the sections becoming progressively shorter as you work from the butt toward the tip. starting with about a 24 – 30 inch butt section. might even want to start with something heavier than 40 but l would still work it down in about 5 stages.
