Popular slang expressions common among spinning anglers. Decoding and interpretation, in order to make it easier to understand each other.
Our spoken fishing language has been perfected over the years, absorbing more and more new words, as new tackles, lures, fishing methods come, with the support of sparkling fishing humor, where can we go without it.
Spinning Fishing Slang
Spinning Fishing Slang – a vigorous mixture of English terms and our Slavic apt words. It is difficult to do without English words, since they are directly related to an avalanche of modern baits, fishing techniques, and various elements of tackle.
“Inch”. Without it, nowhere, because it is this value that is usually used when indicating the length of the bait or rod. Exactly an inch is 2.54 cm, but usually in the mind, the angler counts as 2.5 cm, so it’s easier. For example, it is indicated that the ripper is 4 inches long – we multiply by 2.5, we get almost 10 cm without an error. But it is not customary for us to measure the length of the caught fish in inches, anglers prefer traditional centimeters, or even better meters …
“Foot”. Most often, this value, 30.5 cm, is used when specifying the length of the spinning rod, and is usually noted on the “Ft” form.
“Lb”. An important value, which is often noted on lines and braids, breaking load. Moreover, unlike the diameter of the lines in millimeters, and the breaking load in kilograms, where, by the way, there are enough lies, the marks in pounds are usually quite accurate. The number of pounds marked on the reel is a hint for a rod of what power to use this line, because if it turns out to be too strong, then before it breaks under a critical load, the rod itself may break, which is useless. The pound is 454 g and is marked in “libras” – Lb. As for fish, we still do not weigh it in pounds in large quantities, although it is tempting – the figure is more than twice as solid as compared to traditional kilograms.
“Fat Man”. The second name of wobblers fat (fat) – short, mostly plastic lures in the form of a curved drop, have an intense game, often with a large spread. One of the most popular types of wobblers, so spinningists do not want to lose weight for “fat men”, because they are nimble, catchy, and quite easy to master.
“Buratino”. Remembering the carpentry creativity of the unforgettable “Papa Carlo”, modern spinning players call wooden wobblers exactly “Buratina”, and especially often elongated minnow models, somewhat similar to the wooden nose of a mischievous boy. Losing an expensive catchy “Buratino” is pretty insulting! And usually it is also to blame for this … “Buratino” – this is how the insidious underwater cramps are called, who loves to collect “tribute” in the form of various spinning lures.
“Green Chinese”. A specific model of a wobbler, which has already become a household name for cheap baits, often home-made products that catch predatory fish better than the most expensive, famous wobblers. The history of the “green Chinese” developed banally – this happened to many. The spinning player came across an unnamed Chinese wobbler from an unknown manufacturer, which was good at catching a predator. Attempts to buy the same one were unsuccessful. Assuming that the life of the bait could end at the next writhing, the successful angler published the results of fishing with this wobbler, which he called the “green Chinese” because of the color. And now the Kosadaka company is releasing this “green Chinese” by copying its parameters from a single sample. The result is a typical minnow wobbler 9 cm long, weighing 11 g – someone praises this bait, someone scolds it. But the point is not in a specific wobbler, but in a clear public example of creating a bait “on the knee”, when something really catchy is created intuitively, without serious, expensive research and tests.
“Dead Man”. It is he – the dead hook – who hangs the bait on himself, imagining it as a New Year’s underwater tree. Moreover, “ghoul” means a complex hold, which can only be gotten rid of by deliberate breaking of the line or a very long fuss with the hook, and then without any guarantees. However, there is also a very pleasant “ghoul” – a bite of a large fish, which, after a grip, freezes in place, from several moments to several minutes, and even very experienced spinning players cannot always distinguish such a bite from a hook. The “dead man” is usually pampered with catfish, pike perch, large pike, and sometimes even asp.
“Nezatseplyayka”. An offset hook, or simply “offset”, is designed to protect the bait from snagging on driftwood, thanks to the hook recessed in its body, and the fish is hooked securely. But in practice, not everyone believed the “non-hooks”, calling them “non-hooks”. Admirers of the “offset” assure that when choosing the right hook, corresponding to the size of rubber or foam, with careful assembly of the bait, it normally picks up the fish, allowing you to catch almost without hooks. But nevertheless, some element of “non-cutting” always remains – an open hook a priori cuts more reliably.
“Elastic band from panties.” So it is a little offensive for monofilament that some spinningists call it, because its popularity in spinning has greatly decreased with the appearance of high-quality cords of the smallest diameters, which massively broke even into ultralight with its miniature lures. Braid, also known as “thread”, “wattle”, prides itself not only on its strength, but also on its almost absence of extensibility, which dramatically increases control over the wiring. The fishing line stretches like an elastic band, which is why such a nickname. Although fans of monofilament lines, who like its advantages, remain in the spinning rod. A lot of fishermen are already catching fluorocarbon fishing lines, most often by putting “fluor” on the leashes.
“Dog’s Tail”. A method of guiding a spinning lure, usually a wobbler, with measured pulls, in which the bait moves left – right. The popular term for wiring very accurately notes its features. Taking into account the fact that different dogs wag their tails in different ways, and fishermen lead tricks in different ways with their personal style.
“Fish”. The common name for a ripper is a silicone bait, which in shape resembles its prototype – a live fish. It is true that flowers are often completely unnatural, but the predator and fishermen like this rich palette.
“Snot”. One of the names of the twister is a silicone bait with a long, soft and vigorously vibrating comma-shaped tail. There was a time when twisters were far behind in popularity to rippers, but now it is 50-50, and perch twisters often take the lead in specific spinning arsenals.
“The whole zoo”. For some it is interesting to tune in to catch a certain type of predator and catch it. Others are happy to take a variety of fish in a certain section of a river or lake, and if they succeed, they say they have caught “the whole zoo”. According to the already established opinion, at least three species are drawn to the “zoo”, for example, pike, pike perch, perch. And it doesn’t matter if they were taken for one bait or a wide range of tricks was involved, the main thing is that on one fishing trip, and preferably in one section of the reservoir.
“Dot”. An unambiguous interpretation is a catchy place where a predator defends itself or comes here to feed. Even if not always, but with an enviable frequency. Points are often entered into navigators so that, without wasting time, quickly go to them. If a place does not bring fish, but simply “potentially promising”, or stories are told about it, they say, it was always biting here before, then this is not the point. If only the former point, but who cares …
“Dzhigit”. This word has firmly entered the dictionary of a fisherman, it means a spinning player who catches only with jig lures, without touching baits and wobblers. A fisherman, who for the most part also prefers jig fishing, but periodically uses other lures with one or another success, can be arbitrarily venerable, but cannot bear the title of “horseman”.
Popla Popper. The term implies a combination of a classic miniature popper without a hook and a micro-bait (fly, microtwister, miniature spinner) on a short leash attached to the back of the popper. The main trophy is a large rudd, but having picked up a suitable wiring and bait, they catch any predator in places typical for a “pop-popper” – clean windows among water lilies, among rare reeds, in other difficult conditions where this bait has good passability.
“Micro vibration”. Miniature spoons, fishing with which is almost a separate direction in spinning, just like the same microjig. Due to the appearance of a wide range of already relatively inexpensive, but rather high-quality lures, this fishing is mastered much faster than before. But in general, first of all, these trompe l’oeil came from home-made, and only then went into mass production of eminent and not so famous companies. In addition to the traditional perch, “microcoleblo” actively catches asp, chub, ide, large rudd. Fishermen pay a lot of attention not only to the animation of lures, but also to the careful selection of their color, making up for the insufficient force of vibrations of miniature lures.
“Mormogig”. He is also “Mormospinning”, “Nanospinning”, “Mormodroch”. Spinning direction, which broke away from microjig, as it uses even smaller and lighter baits, similar to jigs – weighing 0.5-0.7 g, up to a maximum of 1 g. Emphasizing its peculiarity, “Mormojig” increasingly refuses even from adding traditional silicone baits, offering fish, soft artificial snags tied on a hook, following the example of fly fishing. And if it doesn’t bite at all, then you can quietly, so that none of your colleagues notice, hook a worm or caddisfly, which the perch will definitely grab, especially in spring.
“Creatura”. The fishing term implies a great variety of “non-standard” silicone lures – roughly speaking, anything that is not a ripper or a twister is a “creature”. All kinds of “worms”, “cuttlefish”, “frogs”, etc. Maximum popularity among “worms”, especially in the fall when hunting for large perch. “Frogs” are also very popular in pike fishing. True, we have not heard of pure “creaturers” – spinningists who catch only with these lures. First, they do not work very reliably in the summer, differing only in cold water. Secondly, in the world of more reliable rippers and twisters, it would still be possible to understand with an avalanche of modern novelties. Nevertheless, the “creature”, not so long ago rejected by many fishermen, has now taken its own niche.
“НХНЧ” – the popular wish in the fishing community “no tail, no scales”, to which we join.
